Manchester United’s preparations for the new season are beginning to take shape as the club strengthens key areas of the squad. According to the information released by the club and reports surrounding its transfer activity, Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos has completed his move to Old Trafford, while experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow is expected to become another new addition after leaving Leeds United.
The two arrivals represent different profiles but share the same purpose: increasing competition, adding depth and helping United build a squad capable of challenging at the highest level throughout a demanding campaign.
Although only 22 years old, Andrey Santos has already built an impressive résumé.
The Brazilian international signed a contract running until June 2031, with an option for an additional year. Following the completion of his move, Santos spoke about fulfilling a lifelong ambition.

The Brazilian also highlighted his excitement about working under Michael Carrick, believing the former United midfielder can help him unlock another level in his game.

Santos added that conversations about the club convinced him he was joining an ambitious project.
“Everybody told me about how ambitious the club is and the amazing environment that has been created here. I know just how strong the squad is and I cannot wait to fight together to compete for the biggest trophies.”
Manchester United’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, explained why the Brazilian had become one of the club’s priority targets.
“Andrey is an outstanding midfielder with excellent technical qualities and the ability to impact the game at both ends of the pitch.”
Wilcox emphasized that securing Santos early in pre-season would allow him to integrate quickly into Michael Carrick’s plans.
“He was a key target for us in an important position, so we are delighted that he will join Michael’s squad so early in pre-season.”
Despite his achievements at club and international level, Wilcox believes the midfielder is still far from reaching his full potential.
“Despite already having extensive experience, leadership abilities and proving his talent at the highest level, Andrey still has enormous potential to develop further, and we cannot wait to see him flourish at Manchester United.”
While Santos is expected to strengthen United’s midfield, Karl Darlow could provide something equally important, healthy competition in the goalkeeping department.
The 35-year-old has built a career defined by resilience and patience. After making his name at Nottingham Forest, he spent nine years with Newcastle United before joining Leeds United.
Initially signed as a backup goalkeeper, Darlow eventually earned his opportunity when Illan Meslier struggled for form during Leeds’ Championship-winning campaign.
Although Lucas Perri later arrived to become first choice, injuries and inconsistent performances once again opened the door for Darlow. From the middle of January until the end of the season, he established himself as Leeds’ preferred goalkeeper.
Reflecting on that journey, Darlow explained that remaining committed during difficult periods made the difference.
“I have always wanted to play wherever I have been. I have just kept myself going and have been true to myself throughout the whole time I have been here.”
He admitted that returning to regular football reminded him why he loves the game.
“Thankfully, I am back in the team and enjoying it. I really love playing football, so it is something that I am excited about, being back in the team and helping the team out in any which way I can.”
The veteran goalkeeper also revealed the mentality that helped him seize every opportunity.
“I have always worked hard to get opportunities and then to make sure when I am on the pitch I perform. You do not get many chances as a goalkeeper, but I know that what I do on the training ground day-in, day-out, holds me in good stead for when I play.”
Although Darlow is widely expected to begin as the second-choice goalkeeper behind Senne Lammens, his career demonstrates that he has repeatedly earned starting opportunities through consistent performances.
His experience could prove valuable not only on the pitch but also in maintaining high standards during training, something Manchester United lacked at times last season.
Strong internal competition often raises individual performances, and United will hope Darlow’s presence pushes every goalkeeper to improve.
