A heartbreaking incident has shaken residents of Rweru Sector in Bugesera District after a 16-year-old girl reportedly took her own life following a disagreement with family members over her use of a mobile phone.
The teenager, who was a second-year secondary school student, had spent about a week staying with her older sibling. During that period, concerns reportedly arose over the amount of time she was spending on her phone, prompting her sibling to restrict her access to it.
According to family members, the decision led to repeated arguments between the two. The disagreements eventually became serious enough for the girl to return to her parents’ home.
However, the tensions did not end there. Seeking a solution, the older sibling later approached their mother in hopes of reconciling the situation. It then emerged that the mother herself had previously confiscated the girl’s phone because she believed it was becoming a major distraction in her daily life.
Family sources say the teenager was deeply upset by the restrictions imposed on her and felt frustrated by the lack of support for her position. The emotional strain reportedly continued into the following day.
On July 4, 2026, the young girl left home carrying a string taken from the hood of a winter jacket. Relatives believed she was simply going for a short walk near the family compound and expected her to return shortly.
Her mother later explained that nothing about her daughter’s behavior suggested she was planning to harm herself.
As evening approached, children returning from collecting animal fodder made a shocking discovery. They informed nearby residents that they had seen a person hanging from a tree. When adults rushed to the scene, they found that the victim was the missing teenager.
The girl’s mother described the painful moment she received the news, saying that neighbors informed her that a child believed to be hers had been found hanging from a tree. Upon reaching the location, she confirmed that it was indeed her daughter.
Authorities were immediately notified, and the body was transported to a medical facility for examination as part of the standard investigation process.
The tragedy has renewed conversations about adolescent mental health, family communication, and the challenges parents face in managing children’s use of digital technology.
Community members in Rweru say the incident serves as a painful reminder of the importance of maintaining open dialogue with young people and paying close attention to signs of emotional distress.
Local residents have expressed shock and sadness over the loss, emphasizing the need for stronger support systems for teenagers who may be struggling with emotional or psychological pressures.
