A secondary school teacher in Busasamana Sector, Nyanza District, has been arrested after authorities seized a large quantity of suspected substandard alcohol allegedly stored at his premises.
The seizure took place on the afternoon of August 20, 2026, in Mugonzi, an area locally known as “Kuri 40,” in Nyanza Cell. More than 50 sacks containing the suspected alcohol were reportedly loaded onto a vehicle, although the exact quantity has not yet been established.
The teacher was present as local authorities, police officers, DASSO personnel and residents removed the alcohol. Police later asked him to enter the vehicle, where he was seated between officers before being taken to Busasamana Police Station.
Authorities acted on information received
Bisengimana Joseph, the officer in charge of finance and administration in Busasamana Sector, told IGIHE that the operation followed information received by local authorities.
“We acted on the information we received and, when we arrived, we found the alcohol there,” he said.
Authorities have not disclosed the precise number of bottles or litres seized. However, the fact that the alcohol was packed in more than 50 sacks indicates that a substantial quantity had been stored at the location.
The circumstances have raised questions about whether the premises were being used as a storage point for the suspected illicit alcohol. Investigators are expected to establish its source, intended market and whether other people were involved.
Arrest comes days before teacher’s wedding
The arrest comes just days before the teacher was scheduled to marry on August 30, 2026.
The teacher has also previously faced a case related to alcohol consumption. According to the information available, he was recently arrested for driving while intoxicated and was sentenced to three months in prison, with the sentence suspended.
That previous case, however, is separate from the current allegations concerning the possession or sale of substandard alcohol. His criminal responsibility in the latest case will depend on evidence gathered during the investigation and any subsequent court proceedings.
Investigation expected to establish source of alcohol
Authorities have not yet released details about the type of alcohol seized, where it was manufactured or how it reached the teacher’s premises.
It is also not yet known whether additional suspects have been arrested in connection with the seizure.
Investigators may seek to establish whether the teacher was directly involved in selling the alcohol or whether he was acting as a storage point within a wider distribution network.
Rwanda intensifies crackdown on substandard alcohol
The arrest comes as Rwanda continues its campaign against substandard alcoholic products, with authorities warning residents against consuming or selling alcohol that does not meet required standards.
Authorities have urged anyone possessing such products to report them so that officials can collect and destroy them rather than allowing them to enter the market.
The campaign is aimed at protecting public health and preventing potentially dangerous alcoholic products from reaching consumers.
Teacher remains presumed innocent
Despite his arrest, the teacher has not been convicted of the allegations currently under investigation. He remains presumed innocent until a competent court determines otherwise.
Investigators will have to establish whether the seized alcohol belonged to him, whether he was involved in its sale and whether other individuals played a role in the alleged operation.
