A phrase that started during a casual online discussion has quickly evolved into one of Rwanda’s most recognizable social media trends.
Musician and media personality Yago Pondat, whose real name is Innocent Nyarwaya, sparked widespread online attention after saying, “Nkinzeho, Nkinguyeho ndongeye nkingaho,” during a live discussion held on June 30, 2026.
The conversation covered several topics, including his future plans and concerns surrounding people claiming to represent his Big Energy community.
During the discussion, Yago warned that some individuals were presenting themselves as supporters of his movement while using its name to insult the Government of Rwanda. He made it clear that he has distanced himself from those people.
He also revealed that he plans to return to Rwanda and said he is ready to confront those involved. Although he declined to identify them during the broadcast, he explained that he would reveal their identities once he resumes his activities in Kigali.
Despite those serious remarks, it was one spontaneous moment that captured the internet’s imagination.
While saying “Nkinzeho, Nkinguyeho ndongeye nkingaho,” Yago briefly lowered his sunglasses, allowing his eyes to be seen before sliding them back into place. The simple gesture instantly became part of the phrase’s appeal.
Within days, social media users began recreating both the expression and the movement. Some copied the way he adjusted his sunglasses, while others creatively adapted the phrase by opening and closing doors, lifting food covers, or performing similar actions that matched the rhythm of the words.
The trend quickly spread beyond ordinary users. Well-known Rwandan entertainers, including Clapton Kibonge, Killaman, DJ Briane, Rusine, and several others, joined the challenge by posting their own humorous versions online.
The growing number of videos highlights how a brief unscripted moment can transform into a nationwide online trend, inspiring thousands of creative interpretations in just a short period.
As more people continue producing their own versions, “Nkinzeho, Nkinguyeho ndongeye nkingaho” has established itself as one of Rwanda’s most talked-about viral catchphrases, demonstrating once again how social media can turn an ordinary expression into a cultural phenomenon almost overnight.
