In Gatsibo District, there is a story about a 36-year-old woman who gave her two children rat poison, and she also drank it, all of whom died after another girl took her man.
This happened on the night of August 11, 2026, in Akamatamo Village, Mamfu Cell, Muhura Sector, Gatsibo District, and it is believed that the woman was jealous of her husband who was having an affair with another girl.
The woman who committed suicide was 36 years old from Muhura Sector, while her children, a girl, were nine years old and a boy, four years old.
Information released by the Executive Secretary of Muhura Sector, Rudasingwa Michael, says that the woman’s husband is a trader in the market, and his wife used to deliver food to him at night.
Rudasingwa Michael told IGIHE that they were called by the woman’s husband after finding his wife and two children dead.
He continued, “At night, a man saw that the food he was supposed to bring him was not there, so he called her on the phone, but the woman did not answer. It ended when he got home and found the bodies of his wife and children lying on the ground, so he immediately started calling for help.”
Rudasingwa continued, saying that residents and leaders in various institutions went there that night and found a letter written by the woman.
It is a letter that sources say shows that her husband had started a special relationship with another girl. The woman wrote that this was one of the reasons she could not accept and decided to commit suicide with their children.
The girl mentioned in the letter and the man were immediately arrested so that an investigation could be conducted into the special relationship they had, as Rudasingwa continued.
This leader also warned families in conflict to approach the authorities so that they can help them.
He said, “The message we are giving is to advise families in conflict Conflicts should be addressed by the authorities for advice rather than taking the decision to commit suicide and kill children to protect their spouse. It is a very bad thing, if you are married to someone and you are having problems, approach the authorities for help.’’
At the time of writing, the bodies of the children and their mother were taken to Kiziguro Hospital for an autopsy to determine what caused their deaths before burial.
