A tragic incident in Rwanda’s Western Province has shocked residents of Rutsiro District after a woman was found dead, hanging inside her home while carrying a young child on her back.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning, June 6, 2026, in Kaboneye Village, Rurara Cell, Mushonyi Sector. Authorities have launched a manhunt for a 25-year-old man who is suspected of being involved in the woman’s death.
According to preliminary information, the victim was discovered hanging inside a room in the house where she had been living with the suspect. The child she was carrying reportedly survived after slipping from her back and falling to the ground.
The disturbing circumstances surrounding the case have left local residents in shock and raised concerns about domestic violence and family-related conflicts.
Rwanda National Police confirmed that the suspect fled shortly after the incident and remains at large. Investigators are currently working to establish the exact circumstances that led to the woman’s death.
Speaking about the case, Western Province Police spokesperson SP Sylvestre Twajamahoro said:
“The information is correct, and the suspect is being searched for so that if the investigation proves he did it, he will be held accountable, as he fled immediately.”
Police officials emphasized that anyone found responsible will face justice once investigations are completed and urged members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement by providing any information that may assist in locating the suspect.
Reports indicate that the deceased woman had previously separated from the man she lived with and had spent some time away from the home. However, she had reportedly returned only a few days before the fatal incident occurred.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether there had been previous disputes between the couple, and investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
The case has renewed public discussion about the importance of addressing family conflicts before they escalate into violence.
