What was expected to be a joyful wedding celebration in Ngoma District turned into a shocking story that has captured public attention after a groom reportedly canceled his wedding only hours before the couple was scheduled to exchange vows.
The bride-to-be, a resident of Gashanda Sector’s Mutsindo Cell, and the groom from Birenga Cell in Kazo Sector had been in a relationship for a considerable period and had already completed most of the preparations for their marriage.
The couple was scheduled to legally marry on June 25, 2026. Family members, friends, and neighbors had been informed of the upcoming ceremony, and many had already made arrangements to attend the celebrations planned after the civil wedding.
According to local residents, preparations were nearly complete. The groom had already paid the bride price, venues had been arranged, and both families appeared fully committed to the marriage.
However, events took a dramatic turn when information allegedly emerged shortly before the wedding that caused the groom to reconsider the relationship.
A local official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the groom learned that some of the information he had been given by his fiancée about her personal background was inaccurate.
The official stated: “The young man had spent a long time communicating with the woman and believed she had completed university studies because that is what she had told him. During the final wedding preparations, he discovered that she had never attended university and was actually in her third year of secondary school. He also learned that she had a four-year-old child at her parents’ home, and he immediately decided to withdraw from the marriage.”
The revelations reportedly stunned members of both communities, particularly because wedding preparations had already advanced significantly.
Residents of Mutsindo Cell said many people had invested time and resources into the planned celebration. Clothing had been rented, refreshments prepared, and relatives had organized transportation and accommodation for guests.
One resident claimed that the groom felt his trust had been broken after learning details that had not been disclosed earlier in the relationship. The resident also noted that there were rumors circulating within the community regarding the bride’s disappearance after the wedding was canceled.
Among those most affected were the young women selected to accompany the bride during the ceremony. They said they had already rented traditional attire and participated in several planning meetings before learning that the wedding would no longer take place.
Following the cancellation, reports emerged that the bride could not immediately be located, prompting concern among relatives and local authorities.
Local leaders worked with various institutions to determine her whereabouts. Their efforts eventually led to her being found alive and safe in Rwamagana District.
Ngenda Mathias, Executive Secretary of Gashanda Sector, confirmed that she had been located and was in good condition.
He said: “What matters to us is that she is alive. As for the cancellation of the wedding, we cannot comment because we have not yet held discussions with those involved. She will need time to recover from what happened.”
The incident has sparked widespread discussion about honesty, transparency, and trust in relationships. Many residents say the situation serves as a reminder that couples planning marriage should openly discuss important aspects of their personal histories before making lifelong commitments.
Community members argue that strong marriages are built on mutual trust and truthful communication. When significant information is withheld or misrepresented, the consequences can be severe, particularly when wedding plans have already reached an advanced stage.
Although the wedding never took place, the story continues to be widely discussed throughout Ngoma and beyond, with many people viewing it as a lesson about the importance of honesty and openness in relationships.
