Kigali Woman Leaves Husband After One Year of Marriage, Community Debates Reasons Behind Separation

A marriage that had barely passed its first anniversary has become a major topic of discussion among traders and residents around Modern Market in Nyabugogo, Kigali, following reports that a businesswoman left her husband and started a new life with another man working in the same commercial area.

According to people familiar with the couple, the two had been legally married for one year and two months before their relationship broke down. The separation has surprised many community members who believed the marriage had a promising future.

Friends, neighbors, and individuals who participated in the wedding ceremony say they never expected the relationship to end so quickly. Several of them describe the situation as both unexpected and unfortunate, especially considering the couple had formally committed themselves to building a life together.

Sources close to the family claim that disagreements related to intimacy became a recurring issue in the relationship. According to those accounts, the woman reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with her married life and eventually told her husband that she had met another man whom she felt was more compatible with her.

Residents say that the situation eventually led her to leave the matrimonial home and move in with a man known for operating mobile money and M2U services within the market area.

Beyond the personal aspects of the separation, financial concerns have also emerged. Community members report that the couple had jointly secured a loan of 800,000 Rwandan francs to support business activities and establish a stronger financial foundation for their family.

Several individuals familiar with the matter claim that the loan remains unresolved. Some have criticized the manner in which the separation occurred, arguing that financial obligations should have been addressed before either party moved on.

One community member stated: “We were saddened that they separated so quickly. Now the husband is left living in a small house, while the wife moved away with most of the household items.”

Others have also alleged that a significant portion of household property was removed from the family residence during the move, although no official determination has been made regarding ownership or division of assets.

A woman who served as a wedding sponsor for the couple expressed hope that both parties would resolve questions related to property and debt through legal and peaceful means.

Media reports indicate that efforts were made to obtain comments from the woman at the center of the story. However, she reportedly declined to discuss her private life. The man she is said to be living with also chose not to comment publicly on the matter.

The story continues to generate conversation among traders and residents in Nyabugogo. While some believe marital challenges should be addressed through dialogue and compromise, others argue that individuals have the right to pursue personal happiness when relationships fail.

As of now, no government institution, law enforcement agency, or judicial authority has publicly confirmed receiving a complaint or opening an investigation related to the matter.

With unanswered questions surrounding shared assets, financial obligations, and the legal implications of the separation, many observers expect additional details to emerge in the coming weeks as the situation develops.
