Residents of Nyagisozi Village in Kiniha Cell, Bwishyura Sector of Karongi District woke up to shocking news after a 54-year-old man from Nyamasheke District was discovered dead inside a woman’s house where he had reportedly spent the night.
The incident, which happened on May 23, 2026, quickly sparked widespread speculation among local residents, with some alleging that the man may have been involved in an illicit affair before his death.
According to preliminary information, the deceased had traveled from Mahembe Sector, Gisoke Cell, Kivumu Village in Nyamasheke District to visit Karongi. However, when he attempted to return home later in the evening, he reportedly failed to find transport.
Sources say the man then contacted a 33-year-old woman living in Karongi, originally from Nyamasheke as well, asking her for accommodation for the night. The woman, identified as Mukashema Clauthilde, allegedly agreed to host him.
The following morning, events took a tragic turn.
Reports indicate that at around 3:00 p.m., the woman went to check on the man where he had been sleeping, only to discover that he had died.
The Executive Secretary of Bwishyura Sector, Rwandekwe Songa confirmed that local authorities and security organs immediately launched investigations into the incident.
He said: “The little information I have is that he had come to visit the area. When he tried to get transport back home, he failed to find a vehicle and ended up spending the night at the home of someone originally from Nyamasheke called Mukashema Clauthilde. Clauthilde later went to check on him around 3 p.m. to see whether he had woken up and found that he had died before informing local authorities.”
Songa also dismissed unverified rumors circulating among residents claiming the man had gone there for an affair.
“I cannot confirm claims that he had come for extramarital relations. Investigators who were with us at the scene are the ones who will establish the truth after interrogations and further investigations,” he added.
The incident has left residents deeply shocked, especially because there were no immediate reports indicating that the deceased had been seriously ill before his death.
Security officials later transported the body to Kibuye Hospital for a postmortem examination aimed at determining the exact cause of death.
Meanwhile, the woman was taken into custody to assist investigators as authorities continue piecing together what exactly happened during the man’s final hours.
Investigations are still ongoing, and authorities say conclusions about the cause of death will only be made public after medical examinations and police inquiries are completed.
