Liverpool’s £86m Transfer Twist as Arne Slot Makes an Unexpected Call

Liverpool are back in Premier League action this weekend as they welcome Burnley to Anfield on Saturday afternoon. But away from the pitch, the noise around transfers is growing louder by the day. January is moving quickly, and Liverpool’s plans under Arne Slot are starting to become clearer.

The Reds have already made their first signing of the January transfer window. Young defender Mor Talla Ndiaye has completed his move to Liverpool after joining from Amitie FC in Senegal. The teenager will begin his journey at Anfield with the club’s U21 side as Liverpool continue their strategy of investing in future talent.

This signing may not grab headlines across Europe, but it shows that Liverpool are still active and alert in the market. Slot and the recruitment team are clearly focused on building for both now and the future, even as the senior squad fights on multiple fronts.

Liverpool are also in active talks with Austria Vienna over another young centre-back. Ifeanyi Ndukwe, just 17 years old, is firmly on the Reds’ radar. The Austria youth international is viewed as a high-potential defender, and Liverpool hope to reach an agreement for him to arrive at Anfield in the summer.

The plan is for Ndukwe to join at the start of pre-season training, which begins in July. While no deal has been finalised yet, Liverpool are optimistic that talks will progress positively in the coming months.

As always, where Liverpool are concerned, the rumour mill never sleeps. Fans are eager to know who might arrive and who could leave, especially as Arne Slot shapes the squad in his image.

One name creating serious excitement is Yan Diomande. The 19-year-old attacker recently admitted that playing for Liverpool one day would be a dream come true. Those words have only added fuel to the growing speculation.

Diomande joined RB Leipzig last summer from La Liga side Leganes after the German club activated his €20m release clause. Since then, the Ivory Coast international has impressed in the Bundesliga with his pace, confidence, and attacking output.

His form has not gone unnoticed. Liverpool are reportedly among several European giants tracking him, including Tottenham, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain. Leipzig, however, are said to value the teenager at a massive £86m.

According to respected journalist Fabrizio Romano, Diomande is expected to leave Leipzig in a big-money move. However, any transfer will not be sanctioned until the summer window. This suggests that while Liverpool may be interested, they will need patience and serious financial backing to compete for his signature.

Another situation being closely watched involves Federico Chiesa. Liverpool are reportedly willing to sell the Italian winger for €20m as talks with Juventus continue behind the scenes.

Italian outlet Calciomercato.com claims that Liverpool have made it clear they are only open to a permanent deal. The Reds are not interested in loan arrangements, despite Juventus pushing for a loan with an option to buy that would become mandatory under certain conditions.

Chiesa joined Liverpool from Juventus in August 2024 for an initial £10m fee after being deemed surplus to requirements by former Juve boss Thiago Motta. Expectations were high, but his time at Anfield has been mixed so far.

The Italy international has made 34 appearances for Liverpool, scoring four goals and providing four assists. While his talent is not in doubt, injuries and competition for places have limited his impact.

Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti recently played down the rumours linking Chiesa with a return to Turin. Speaking via Football Italia, he said, “I am pleased you are giving me this news, seeing as we haven’t even had a meeting yet on the transfer market. But it’s the first I’ve heard of it. For the moment, it’s just thrown out there, but absolutely nothing concrete behind it.”

Those comments suggest that while discussions may be happening at club level, nothing is close to completion yet.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have made a firm decision regarding Calvin Ramsay. Reports from the Daily Mail claim that the Reds do not intend to let the right-back leave on loan this month.

Arne Slot wants Ramsay to remain at the club following a serious injury to Conor Bradley. The young Northern Ireland international suffered a season-ending knee injury and underwent surgery earlier this week.

Bradley was forced off late in Liverpool’s goalless draw away to Premier League leaders Arsenal last Thursday. His focus now turns to recovery, with a race on to be fit for the summer World Cup, should Northern Ireland qualify through the play-offs.

Ramsay, who has yet to feature in the Premier League this season, is now expected to provide cover and competition at right-back for the remainder of the campaign.

As Liverpool prepare to return to action, it is clear that this January window is about balance. Youth signings, careful decisions, and future planning all point to a calm but focused approach under Arne Slot.

The coming weeks could still bring surprises, but for now, Liverpool appear content to keep their powder dry, with one eye firmly on a potentially explosive summer transfer window.
