Manchester United fans have found a new reason to smile as their goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, continues to impress in his first season at Old Trafford. The Belgian shot-stopper, who joined from Royal Antwerp on deadline day last summer, has quickly settled into life at one of the world’s biggest football clubs.
Lammens did not start immediately. After sitting out the first three Premier League matches, he made his debut in a commanding 2-0 win over Sunderland. Since that day, the 23-year-old has held onto his spot in goal with confidence and poise.
In 22 appearances so far, Lammens has kept four clean sheets and conceded 28 goals, statistics that show promise for a young goalkeeper still adjusting to the Premier League’s pace and pressure.
Recently, Lammens opened up about his footballing inspirations and the United goalkeepers he admired growing up. In a candid chat with Premier League Productions, he explained why he sees himself in a similar light to one of Manchester United’s most iconic keepers, Edwin van der Sar.
“Growing up, of course, David de Gea was and is still a big goalkeeper in the world, especially those years when he was at his height in this club, so of course you watch him most of the time,” Lammens said.
He continued: “But when I was growing up, it was 2008/09, that was prime United as well, so it was Van der Sar in goal then. I don’t really recall one particular save… I think I also can resonate with him more. Our characters are maybe a bit more alike, and just every game he was solid and he was there and he was a rock behind the defence.”
For Lammens, goalkeeping is about more than just making spectacular saves. He believes that at a club like Manchester United, a goalkeeper must also allow the team’s outfield stars to shine.
“That’s also when I always tell some teammates, because you’re at this big club and you have so many good teammates, you also sometimes have to give them the possibility to shine. As a goalkeeper, sometimes you just don’t really have to make too many big saves, you just don’t want to give the game away, you always want to stay in the game,” Lammens said.
He cited attacking players like Bruno Fernandes as examples of teammates who can change the outcome of a game. His approach is to keep the team in the match, ready for moments of brilliance from others.
Fans will be thrilled if Lammens can enjoy even a fraction of the illustrious career that Van der Sar had at Old Trafford. The Dutch legend won the Premier League four times, lifted the Champions League, the Club World Cup, and two Carabao Cups during his time in England.
For now, Lammens is focused on the upcoming fixture against Everton, a game he knows holds personal significance.
“I think I would say it every week that it’s an important game, but especially this one for me, because our home game against them was a really tough loss, playing against ten men as well. I think we also owe it to ourselves and to the fans to keep that in mind and to get a reaction,” he said.
Momentum is key for Lammens and Manchester United. After a week without a game, he wants to build on a string of strong performances.
“I think the way we’re playing right now, of course with the last five games, which were good, you just want to keep that momentum going after a week without a game,” Lammens added.
United supporters have been impressed by the young Belgian’s calm presence in goal. His style is steady and calculated, reminiscent of Van der Sar’s ability to remain composed under pressure.
Analysts point out that Lammens’ decision-making and positioning are already showing signs of a goalkeeper who could dominate the box for years to come. His ability to read the game and communicate with defenders helps keep the defensive line organized and confident.
Teammates have also noticed Lammens’ influence. His calm demeanor allows attacking players to focus on their creative duties, knowing the goalkeeper is a reliable last line of defense.
It is rare for a young goalkeeper to thrive immediately at a club of United’s stature. Lammens’ early performances suggest he is not just coping but thriving under the spotlight.
As the Premier League season unfolds, all eyes will be on Lammens to see if he can cement his place as United’s long-term number one. Fans hope his development mirrors the successes of past greats like Edwin van der Sar.
Lammens’ mentality is as important as his technical ability. He is learning to balance making saves with maintaining composure, letting his team’s attacking stars influence the game, and keeping his side competitive in every match.
Despite being only 23, Lammens’ insight into goalkeeping strategy is mature. His recognition of the importance of teamwork shows a player who understands his role extends beyond shot-stopping.
If he continues on this trajectory, Senne Lammens could become one of Manchester United’s modern greats, a goalkeeper who is remembered for both his skill and leadership on the pitch.
With Everton looming on the calendar, the Belgian is ready to prove himself again, eager to secure another clean sheet and keep United in the hunt for top honors.
Manchester United fans will be watching, hopeful that their new Belgian goalkeeper can replicate the calm, commanding style of Edwin van der Sar and lead the team to future glory.
