Liverpool manager Arne Slot has admitted there are “no guarantees” about his future at the club if the team fails to qualify for the Champions League this season. The Dutch coach, who arrived at Anfield with high hopes, now finds himself under growing pressure after a disappointing second campaign.
Slot’s first season at Liverpool was a dream. He led the Reds to the Premier League title in his very first attempt. Fans celebrated, and many believed a new era of success had begun at Anfield. His attacking style and calm leadership quickly won over supporters.
However, this season has been very different. Liverpool are currently sitting in sixth place in the Premier League table. They are already 17 points behind league leaders Arsenal after losing to Manchester City over the weekend. The gap has shocked many fans who expected the team to challenge for the title again.
Now, instead of fighting for the championship, Liverpool are battling to secure a place in the top four. A top-four finish is important because it guarantees qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season. Missing out would be a major financial and sporting setback for the club.
When asked whether failing to qualify for the Champions League could decide his future, Slot gave an honest response. He said: “That is a difficult question for me to answer because I don’t decide on my future. The only thing I do know is that it happened before and recently and it didn’t affect the future of that manager.”
His words show that he understands the pressure but also knows that football can be unpredictable. He added: “But that doesn’t guarantee anything, of course. In general, managers, especially at this club – maybe somewhere else – it is not only about results. Mainly, but not only.”
Slot continued to explain that clubs sometimes look beyond results. “At some clubs they also look at the progress the players make, the progress the team makes, the circumstances are sometimes taken into account.”
He made it clear that he believes Liverpool is one of those clubs. “That is not at all clubs, but I think I am working at a club that does look at those things, as it has shown in the past when the club did not qualify for the Champions League.”
Liverpool last missed out on Champions League qualification in the 2022/23 season. That year, under former manager Jurgen Klopp, the team finished fifth in the table. Despite that setback, Klopp kept his job and continued leading the team.
Slot seems to be pointing to that example as proof that the club can be patient. Still, he admits that nothing is certain in football. Results always matter, especially at a club with Liverpool’s history and ambition.
The pressure has increased ahead of Liverpool’s next match. The Reds will travel to Sunderland in midweek, hoping to restart their push for a top-four finish. Every point now feels crucial in the race for Champions League football.
Former Manchester United and England star Wayne Rooney has also spoken about Slot’s situation. Rooney believes that the coming months could be decisive. He said: “So yeah, I think it just brings a little bit more pressure on Arne Slot, I’d imagine. Now they’ve got to battle on to try and make a Champions League place. So yeah, I think there’ll be pressure coming on Arne Slot.”
Rooney added another strong comment about what could happen in the summer. “I don’t think they’ll change anything now, but in the summer it’ll be really interesting. Arne Slot’s job might depend on if he finishes in the Champions League places.”
These words highlight the reality of modern football. Managers are often judged quickly. Even one bad season can change everything, especially at a club that expects to compete for trophies every year.
Slot signed a three-year contract when he joined Liverpool from Feyenoord. His current deal is expected to run until the end of the 2026/27 season. On paper, he still has time. But contracts in football do not always guarantee security.
Fans are divided. Some believe Slot deserves patience because of what he achieved in his first season. Others feel that Liverpool cannot afford to miss out on the Champions League and must make tough decisions if needed.
Financially, the Champions League is extremely important. The competition brings huge revenue from broadcasting, sponsorship, and matchday income. Missing out could affect the club’s ability to sign top players in the transfer market.
Sportingly, it also matters. Top players want to play in the Champions League. Without it, Liverpool could struggle to attract or keep world-class talent. That is why the next few games could shape the future of the club.
For now, Arne Slot remains calm and focused. He knows that the only way to answer critics is through results on the pitch. The battle for the top four is far from over, but the margin for error is very small.
As Liverpool prepare for their trip to Sunderland, one question remains in the air at Anfield: Will Arne Slot save his job by leading the Reds back into the Champions League, or could this season mark the beginning of the end?
Only the final standings will give the answer.
