Liverpool are facing one of their most worrying seasons in recent years, and pressure is growing fast around manager Arne Slot. What once looked like a smooth transition has turned into a tense and uncertain campaign.
Jamie Carragher has now delivered a brutal warning. The Liverpool legend believes Slot’s job could be on the line if the club fails to qualify for the Champions League.
Liverpool, who were champions last season, are currently in sharp decline. They are without a win in five matches and confidence inside the squad appears to be fading week by week.
The situation has become even more alarming as Liverpool have dropped below rivals Manchester United and Chelsea in the Premier League table. The risk of missing out on Europe’s top competition is now very real.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher made it clear that failing to reach the Champions League would be unacceptable for a club of Liverpool’s size.
He said: “Once you see what Manchester United have done in the past couple of weeks, once you start seeing Chelsea, when you start seeing where Liverpool could actually finish outside of the Champions League positions, that’s when you fear for them.”
Carragher explained that missing the Champions League changes everything for a manager at a top club like Liverpool.
“That’s when you have a completely different proposition when we’re talking about the manager’s job. That’s completely different,” he added.
According to Carragher, not winning the league is one thing. But failing to qualify for the Champions League is another level of failure.
“If we’re talking about not winning the league or not challenging for the league that is collective responsibility, and Liverpool don’t win the league every season,” he said.
But he then highlighted the financial reality at the club, which makes the current form even harder to defend.
“Not making the Champions League from being champions, spending £450million and having the highest wage bill…I think they have serious questions,” Carragher continued.
The former defender did not hold back when delivering his final verdict on Slot’s future.
“If they don’t qualify for the Champions League having won the league last year and spent as much as they have, I don’t think he’s got a leg to stand on.”
Those words have sent shockwaves through Liverpool supporters, many of whom are already frustrated by the team’s performances.
Reports are now circulating that Slot’s sacking could be imminent if results do not improve quickly. Some sources even suggest Liverpool are preparing a dramatic short-term solution.
Speculation has grown around Steven Gerrard, with rumors claiming the club legend could be appointed as interim manager if Slot is removed.
Such a move would ignite emotions at Anfield, but it would also show how serious the situation has become behind the scenes.
Despite the noise, Arne Slot appears calm and publicly unconcerned about his future at the club.
The Dutchman believes Liverpool are going through a transition period and insists that patience is required from everyone involved.
He said: “Everyone at the club, me, ownership, sports directors, we know what it takes to make the next step in this transition phase.”
Slot admitted that progress does not always happen instantly, especially during periods of change.
“But sometimes a little bit of patience is needed in that as well,” he added.
For now, Liverpool remain in a dangerous position. Every match feels like a final, and every dropped point increases the pressure on the manager.
If Champions League qualification slips away, Carragher’s warning may soon become reality. At a club like Liverpool, there is little room for excuses — and even less room for patience.
