Death of Wazalendo Commander General Byamungu in Drone Strike Shakes South Kivu

The death of self-proclaimed General Byamungu Ruduga Addallah, a prominent Wazalendo commander in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has now been officially confirmed after days of speculation across South Kivu.

The confirmation came during his burial ceremony held in Kigongo, Uvira territory, where Wazalendo fighters, local leaders and residents gathered to pay tribute to a man many supporters described as “a hero who died on the battlefield.”

According to testimonies shared during the funeral, General Byamungu was killed in a drone strike in Luvungi, located in the Ruzizi Plain, an area that has recently witnessed intensified military operations and armed clashes.

Sources close to Wazalendo said the commander was targeted while coordinating and reorganizing armed factions operating in the region. Although rumors about his death had circulated widely on social media and among residents for several days, the burial ceremony marked the first public confirmation from his allies and associates.

General Byamungu had become one of the most recognizable figures within the Wazalendo movement due to his efforts to unify various local armed groups fighting against rival factions such as MRDP-Twirwaneho, M23 and other armed movements active in eastern Congo.

In territories including Uvira, Fizi and Mwenga, many supporters viewed him as a mobilizer capable of bringing fragmented militias under a common structure. Some of his followers praised him for encouraging young members of the Bafuliiru and Babembe communities to join armed resistance movements and participate in operations targeting areas inhabited by Banyamulenge communities in South Kivu.

However, Wazalendo groups have also faced serious accusations from human rights organizations and local residents. Critics accuse some factions of looting, extortion, attacks on civilians and contributing to worsening insecurity in areas under their control.

As a result, General Byamungu leaves behind a deeply divisive legacy. While supporters portray him as a defender of local communities, others associate his name with the violent and chaotic conduct that has characterized several Wazalendo factions in eastern DR Congo.

Political and security analysts believe his death could significantly affect the operational structure of Wazalendo groups in Uvira and Fizi territories, especially because of the influence he had gained in coordinating otherwise fragmented armed networks.

Some observers fear that his absence may trigger internal rivalries among Wazalendo factions or weaken their military coordination at a time when armed confrontations continue to intensify across South Kivu.

The conflict in eastern Congo continues to evolve with increasing use of drones, heavy weapons and coordinated armed operations involving multiple factions.

While Wazalendo supporters continue honoring General Byamungu as a fallen battlefield figure, many civilians across South Kivu remain trapped in uncertainty, hoping for lasting peace after years of violence and instability.
