Fresh security concerns have emerged in the highlands of South Kivu after MRDP-Twirwaneho announced that it had received information indicating preparations for potential military operations in several areas, including Minembwe, Fizi, Itombwe and Uvira.
In a statement released on May 29, 2026, the movement claimed that military preparations involving the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and Burundian troops were reportedly underway. According to the statement, the planned operations could involve the use of military aircraft, drones and other heavy military equipment.
MRDP-Twirwaneho expressed concern that any large-scale military action in the region could have serious consequences for civilians living in the area, particularly members of the Banyamulenge community residing in the mountainous parts of South Kivu.
The movement stated: “We have credible information indicating preparations for military operations that could target Minembwe, Fizi, Itombwe and Uvira using aircraft, drones and other heavy military assets.”
According to the organization, preventing further instability should be a priority in order to avoid additional humanitarian challenges and civilian suffering. It stressed that the protection of local communities must remain at the center of any security considerations.
MRDP-Twirwaneho also called for the withdrawal of Burundian troops from the territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo, arguing that their presence could contribute to rising tensions in the region.
The statement comes at a time when security developments in eastern Congo continue to attract international attention. Several areas of South Kivu have remained vulnerable to recurring conflicts, population displacement and humanitarian concerns.
In its appeal, MRDP-Twirwaneho urged the United Nations, the African Union and other international organizations to take preventive action aimed at avoiding both a security deterioration and a potential humanitarian crisis.
The movement emphasized the need for dialogue, mediation efforts and conflict-prevention mechanisms before the situation escalates further.
However, neither the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo nor the government of Burundi had issued an official statement confirming or denying the allegations at the time of publication.
As observers continue to monitor developments closely, many are awaiting responses from relevant authorities and international actors regarding the claims made by MRDP-Twirwaneho and the broader security outlook in South Kivu.
Analysts note that Minembwe, Fizi, Itombwe and Uvira remain strategically important areas within South Kivu. They argue that political dialogue and peacebuilding initiatives could play a critical role in reducing tensions and preventing further instability in the region.
