A serious incident at Runaba School in Butaro Sector, Burera District, has prompted local authorities and law enforcement agencies to launch investigations after a group of students allegedly assaulted several teachers, leaving some injured.
According to preliminary information, fourteen students are suspected of participating in the attack, while nine have already been arrested. Five others are reportedly on the run and are being sought by authorities.
The incident has raised concerns among education stakeholders and parents, particularly because it occurred within a school environment where discipline, safety, and mutual respect are expected to prevail.
Burera District Mayor Soline Mukamana said initial findings suggest that the confrontation may have originated from concerns related to food provided to students.
She explained that five teachers were attacked during the incident and confirmed that district authorities are working closely with school officials to understand the circumstances that led to the violence.
Mukamana also noted that concerns about food have surfaced in other schools before, prompting authorities to examine whether students are receiving adequate meals and whether underlying welfare issues could be contributing to tensions within learning institutions.
While investigations continue, local leaders have emphasized that acts of violence against teachers cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. Authorities have warned that students found responsible could face legal consequences in accordance with Rwandan law.
The Rwanda National Police confirmed that the incident came to its attention on June 23 and that the suspects were promptly arrested for questioning and further investigation.
Police spokesperson for the Northern Province, CIP Ignace Ngirabakunzi, stated that investigators are still working to establish the exact cause of the confrontation and determine individual responsibilities.
He also urged students across the country to maintain discipline, respect their teachers, and focus on their studies as a foundation for a successful future.
The case has reignited discussions about student welfare, school feeding programs, and the importance of constructive communication between learners, educators, and school administrators whenever grievances arise.
The nine suspects are currently being held at Butaro Police Station while investigations continue. Authorities say additional information will be released once the inquiry is completed and the facts surrounding the incident are fully established.
