Student Dies After Dormitory Fight Over a Phone at Kagogo Secondary School in Rwanda

Shock and grief have spread across Rwanda’s Burera District after a student lost his life following a violent confrontation inside a school dormitory at Kagogo Secondary School.

According to information from the area, the incident occurred on the evening of June 11, 2026, when a dispute involving a mobile phone escalated into a serious altercation among male students living in the boarding facilities. School authorities reportedly became fully aware of the situation the following morning.

Residents familiar with the incident say what began as a disagreement over a phone quickly spiraled out of control, eventually leaving several students injured and one dead.

One local resident described the situation, saying, “The boys fought over a phone in the dormitory until they killed each other, and one passed away.”

The tragedy has raised concerns among parents, educators, and community members about student safety in boarding schools and the effectiveness of conflict prevention mechanisms within dormitory environments.

Police officials confirmed that the confrontation resulted in multiple injuries. Some of the affected students were rushed to medical facilities for treatment, but one of the injured students later succumbed to his wounds.

Speaking about the incident, Northern Province Police spokesperson CIP Ngirabakunzi Ignace said: “There was a clash among some of the students, which resulted in injuries to some, they were taken for medical treatment, and one of the injured passed away.”

Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine exactly what happened, how the dispute developed, and the specific role played by those involved. As part of the ongoing investigation, seven individuals suspected of involvement in the student’s death have been arrested.

The case has sparked a broader conversation about discipline, supervision, and student welfare in boarding schools. Education experts note that while disagreements among students are not uncommon, incidents that end in loss of life highlight the need for stronger monitoring systems, conflict-resolution programs, and psychological support services within schools.

Community leaders are also calling for increased awareness among students regarding peaceful conflict management and responsible use of personal property, including mobile devices, which can sometimes become sources of tension in shared living spaces.

As investigations continue, a family mourns the loss of a young life, while the wider community awaits answers about the circumstances that transformed an ordinary school evening into a devastating tragedy.

The incident stands as a painful reminder of the importance of vigilance, communication, and early intervention whenever conflicts arise among students living together in boarding environments.
