A dramatic political development in Uganda has drawn national attention after Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba announced that he would release prominent lawyer and opposition figure Erias Lukwago, claiming the decision was influenced by a personal appeal from his wife, Charlotte.
Lukwago, a veteran politician and former long-serving Mayor of Kampala, was arrested on June 15, 2026, by members of Uganda’s special forces. The detention followed directives publicly attributed to Gen Muhoozi, who currently serves as Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and is also the son of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
The controversy stems from Lukwago’s role in the legal team representing opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye. In recent weeks, Lukwago had sought legal action aimed at compelling Gen Muhoozi to appear before court over statements he allegedly made concerning Besigye.
Muhoozi had previously posted messages on social media suggesting that he could have Besigye abducted and subjected to harsh treatment. Those remarks sparked concern among lawyers and rights advocates, who argued that such statements warranted judicial scrutiny.
As tensions escalated, Muhoozi responded with a series of public messages directed at those attempting to challenge him through the courts. He warned that anyone seeking to summon him before a judge would face consequences and indicated that such individuals could be detained.
Following Lukwago’s arrest, Muhoozi continued posting messages online, suggesting that the lawyer was being subjected to punishment while in custody. One of his most widely discussed posts read: “I am proud of all the pain and suffering I am causing the sinner Lukwago!”
The arrest triggered condemnation from Uganda’s legal community. The country’s lawyers’ association described the detention as an attack on the legal profession and called for Lukwago’s immediate release.
Despite those calls, Muhoozi initially appeared unmoved by the criticism. However, on June 16, he announced that Lukwago would be released and transferred to the police for any further legal procedures.
In a subsequent message, Muhoozi revealed that his wife had played a decisive role in changing his mind.
He stated: “My beloved wife Charlotte has convinced me to release the sinner Lukwago. I am releasing him because of the love I have for her [my wife].”
The statement quickly attracted widespread attention across social media platforms, with some observers interpreting it as evidence of Charlotte’s influence within the family, while others viewed it as an attempt to ease growing public pressure.
The incident unfolds against the backdrop of the ongoing case involving Dr. Kizza Besigye, who was arrested in Kenya in November 2024 and accused of plotting to remove President Museveni from power through armed means.
Since Besigye’s arrest, Lukwago has remained one of the most visible members of his legal defense team. His detention and subsequent release have added a new chapter to Uganda’s increasingly tense political landscape, raising fresh questions about the relationship between state power, the military, and opposition politics in the country.
