Fresh fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has drawn renewed attention after reports confirmed the death of Obed Ngabo, a senior figure associated with the Coalition Libérale pour la Démocratie (CLD), one of the armed factions operating under the broader Wazalendo coalition supporting Congolese government forces against AFC/M23.
Sources from Masisi Territory in North Kivu said Ngabo was killed on Friday, May 22, 2026, during clashes that erupted near Rubaya, an area that has repeatedly witnessed fierce confrontations between rival forces.
The news of his death was publicly confirmed by Ngarambe Manzi Willy, the deputy governor of North Kivu on the AFC/M23 side, who posted a strongly worded statement on X accusing Ngabo of involvement in attacks against civilians shortly before his death.
He wrote: “Two days ago he burned civilians’ homes, and today the world is a better place without the man calling himself General Obed. He has joined Ruhinda (Rugayamikore, former commander of the FDLR special force), Mudacumura [Sylivestre], former head of FDLR-FOCA, Cirimwami [Peter Nkuba], former military governor of North Kivu, and others.”
The statement quickly spread across social media platforms, sparking reactions from both supporters and critics of AFC/M23. While some described the development as a battlefield victory, others warned that the escalating violence in eastern Congo continues to deepen instability and humanitarian suffering.
The CLD faction had been operating alongside other Wazalendo groups supporting Congolese government troops in several parts of North and South Kivu. In recent months, pro-government armed groups have increased their activities in territories including Masisi, Walikale, and Rutshuru, areas that remain at the center of the conflict.
Rubaya, where Ngabo was reportedly killed, is considered strategically important because of its rich mineral resources. Control over the area carries both military and economic significance, making it one of the most contested locations in North Kivu.
Ngabo’s death comes amid a broader wave of military confrontations that have claimed the lives of several armed group leaders and senior officers in eastern Congo in recent months. Analysts say the continued fighting highlights the intensity of the conflict between Congolese government-backed forces and AFC/M23, which still controls significant territory in the region.
Neither Wazalendo representatives nor CLD leadership immediately released an official statement regarding Ngabo’s death. However, residents in Masisi reported that clashes continued around Rubaya even after news of his killing emerged, forcing more civilians to flee their homes.
Security analysts believe the loss of a prominent Wazalendo commander could affect the operational coordination of pro-government armed groups, especially in Masisi, one of the most volatile frontlines in eastern DR Congo.
