DRC: Tensions Rise After AFC/M23-Appointed Leader Is Killed Just 48 Hours After Appointment

Fear and uncertainty are spreading across parts of Ikobo Groupement in Walikale Territory after a newly appointed local leader was shot dead only two days after being installed by the AFC/M23 coalition.

According to reports from Iremya locality in North Kivu’s Walikale Territory, the victim was attacked at his home on the night of Wednesday, May 13, 2026. Local sources say armed Wazalendo fighters, believed to be operating alongside FARDC elements, carried out the assassination before fleeing into nearby forests.

Witnesses say the attackers stormed the man’s residence late at night and opened fire on him in front of his wife and children. Residents described the killing as swift and highly coordinated, suggesting that the operation had been carefully planned in advance.

The victim had reportedly spent less than 48 hours in office after being appointed by AFC/M23 following the coalition’s recent takeover of several areas in Ikobo Groupement. In recent weeks, the movement had begun installing new local administrators in territories under its control as part of efforts to consolidate authority.

The assassination has triggered panic among local residents, many of whom now fear that political and military rivalries are increasingly targeting civilians and newly appointed officials.

One resident from Ikobo said the incident demonstrates how fragile security has become in the region.

He stated: “People are terrified. Seeing someone killed inside his own home in front of his family only two days after taking office shows how dangerous the situation has become.”

Observers following developments in Walikale believe the killing may be linked to growing disputes over territorial control and local administration in conflict-affected parts of North Kivu.

Some residents also believe the attack may have been intended as a warning to AFC/M23 after the group expanded its administrative structures in recently captured areas.

The attackers reportedly disappeared into surrounding bushland immediately after the shooting, leaving local communities in fear of further retaliatory violence.

This is the first known assassination of a local administrator in Ikobo since AFC/M23 established control over the area and began appointing civilian authorities. The incident has intensified concerns that confrontations involving AFC/M23, FARDC and Wazalendo fighters could escalate further in Walikale and neighboring territories.

The victim was buried on Thursday, May 14, 2026, during a funeral marked by grief and anxiety among residents. Many who attended the burial said they were increasingly worried about the deteriorating security situation and the continued cycle of violence affecting communities in North Kivu.

While the exact motive behind the killing remains unclear, several local sources suspect it was connected to ongoing struggles for influence and authority in territories contested by armed groups operating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

As fighting continues across different parts of North Kivu, civilians remain the primary victims of the conflict, facing killings, displacement, destruction of property and persistent insecurity.
