AFC/M23 Reshuffles Military Intelligence as Col. Kamasa Replaces Nzenze and Sematama Takes Charge of South Kivu

The AFC/M23 coalition has launched a major restructuring of its military and intelligence leadership, signaling a new phase in its operations across eastern Democratic Republic of Congo as the group seeks to strengthen coordination, expand battlefield influence, and tighten internal security.

Sources within the movement confirmed that Colonel Kamasa Ndakize Welcome, previously known as the spokesperson of Twirwaneho, has been appointed as the new head of intelligence for AFC/M23, replacing Colonel John Imani Nzenze.

The leadership changes, approved by the coalition’s top command in May 2026, are being viewed by analysts as part of a broader strategic reorganization aimed at consolidating military operations from North Kivu to South Kivu.

Following his removal from the intelligence department, Col. Nzenze was reassigned to Walikale Territory, a mineral-rich and strategically sensitive area increasingly viewed as a critical front in the conflict.

The coalition also announced adjustments in divisional military leadership. The First Division, covering Lubero, Rutshuru, and Nyiragongo, is now under Gen. de Brigade Boduin Ngaruye. The Second Division operating in Masisi will be led by Gen. de Brigade Justin Gacheri Musanga, while the Third Division has been placed under Gen. de Brigade Byamungu.

In another significant move, Gen. de Brigade Charles Sematama of Twirwaneho has officially been entrusted with overseeing military operations in South Kivu and Minembwe, reinforcing the growing alliance between Twirwaneho and AFC/M23.

Security analysts say the appointment of Col. Kamasa to the intelligence department is more than a routine replacement. It reflects the coalition’s effort to create a unified intelligence structure linking operational zones in both North and South Kivu.

The move is also interpreted as a strong political and military signal toward Twirwaneho commanders and fighters, showing that the group now occupies a central role within AFC’s broader command structure.

Observers believe the redeployment of Col. Nzenze to Walikale should not be viewed as a demotion, but rather as a tactical assignment to a highly strategic area where AFC/M23 is believed to be expanding military activity.

Walikale and parts of South Kivu remain key zones because of their mineral wealth, transportation corridors, and continuing clashes involving FARDC forces, foreign mercenaries, and armed groups opposed to AFC/M23.

Military observers further argue that the reshuffle comes amid growing concerns over drone warfare and aerial intelligence operations allegedly used by Congolese government forces. Several senior AFC/M23 figures have reportedly been targeted in recent months through sophisticated intelligence tracking and air surveillance.

By appointing a new intelligence chief, AFC/M23 appears determined to strengthen its counter-intelligence capabilities and improve protection for senior leaders including Gen. Sultani Makenga and Corneille Nangaa.

The changes also follow the coalition’s “Uongozi Bora” leadership training program held in April 2026, an initiative designed to reform internal administration and modernize command structures within the movement.

Analysts believe the restructuring could significantly influence the next phase of the conflict in eastern Congo, particularly in Walikale, Masisi, Lubero, South Kivu, and Minembwe, where AFC/M23 continues to reinforce its military presence and strategic networks.
