Growing security concerns have emerged once again in South Kivu following reports from AFC/M23 alleging that heavily populated areas under its control were targeted in a new series of attacks that left civilians dead and several others wounded.
According to a statement released by AFC/M23, attacks were carried out on Sunday, June 7, 2026, between 3:15 p.m. and 3:50 p.m. in the densely populated localities of Bidegu and Irundu in the Minembwe area.
The movement stated that shells struck civilian zones and resulted in casualties among local residents. AFC/M23 reported that two civilians were killed while seven others suffered serious injuries, including women and children.
The allegations have renewed concerns over the humanitarian situation in the region, where communities have already faced years of instability, displacement, and recurring violence.
The latest accusations come only days after AFC/M23 reported another round of aerial strikes targeting Gakenke, Bidegu, and Mikenke during the night of June 3–4, 2026.
According to the group, those operations involved kamikaze drones and KT-6 aircraft. AFC/M23 accused the Kinshasa government and its allies of being responsible for the attacks.
The movement argues that the continued military operations are contributing to civilian deaths, destruction of property, and the displacement of local populations. It also maintains that warnings about the potential consequences of such attacks had previously been communicated to both Congolese citizens and members of the international community.
AFC/M23 further claimed that the absence of strong reactions from relevant actors risks encouraging additional abuses against civilians and worsening insecurity in the region.
Residents in and around Minembwe continue to face uncertainty as security conditions remain fragile. Many families have reportedly been forced to flee their homes, while others live under the constant fear of renewed attacks.
At the time these allegations were made public, no official response had been issued by the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo regarding the claims contained in the AFC/M23 statements.
Observers of the conflict in eastern Congo note that despite ongoing diplomatic initiatives and regional peace efforts, the security situation remains highly volatile. Civilians continue to carry the heaviest burden of the conflict, with many hoping for a lasting political solution that can restore stability and allow communities to rebuild their lives.
For residents of Minembwe, the desire remains clear: a return to peace, security, and normal daily life after years of conflict and uncertainty.
