Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United and founder of the chemical giant INEOS, is under scrutiny after making controversial comments about immigration in the UK. The Football Association (FA) is now reportedly set to investigate whether his words have brought football into disrepute.
Ratcliffe, one of Britain’s richest men, triggered a public outcry after he claimed the UK “has been colonised by immigrants.” His remarks sparked widespread criticism from politicians, football fans, and social media users.
In an interview with Sky News, Ratcliffe said, “You can’t have an economy with nine million people on benefits and huge levels of immigrants coming in. I mean, the UK has been colonised. It’s costing too much money. The UK has been colonised by immigrants, really, hasn’t it? I mean, the population of the UK was 58 million in 2020, now it’s 70 million. That’s 12 million people.”
However, official data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates the UK population was around 67 million in mid-2020 and 70 million in mid-2024, slightly different from Ratcliffe’s numbers.
The comments immediately drew the attention of Prime Minister Keir Starmer. On X, Starmer wrote, “Offensive and wrong. Britain is a proud, tolerant and diverse country. Jim Ratcliffe should apologise.”
A spokesperson from Downing Street added that Ratcliffe’s words “play into the hands of those who want to divide our country.”
Ratcliffe later issued a clarification, saying he was sorry if his choice of language offended people. He stressed that his intention was to raise the issue of “controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth.”
He explained, “My comments were made while answering questions about UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, where I was discussing the importance of economic growth, jobs, skills, and manufacturing in the UK.”
He added, “It is critical that we maintain an open debate on the challenges facing the UK. Governments must manage migration alongside investment in skills, industry, and jobs so that long-term prosperity is shared by everyone.”
Despite his clarification, Ratcliffe’s remarks caused anger online, with many calling them offensive and divisive.
The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, spoke out, saying that Ratcliffe’s comments were “inaccurate, insulting and inflammatory.”
Football fans also expressed concern about the impact of Ratcliffe’s words on the Manchester United community. The Manchester United Supporters Trust posted on X, “No fan should feel excluded from following or supporting the club because of their race, religion, nationality, or background. Comments from the club’s senior leadership should make inclusion easier, not harder. This is not about politics; it is about ensuring that the custodians of Manchester United act in a way that unites supporters rather than marginalising any part of our fanbase.”
Meanwhile, the Manchester United Muslim Supporters Club warned that using the term “colonisation” only served to “stoke the flames” and deepen divisions among fans.
If the FA decides to charge Ratcliffe, he could face a disciplinary hearing. While any fine would likely be symbolic for a billionaire like him, the situation could still be embarrassing for the man who helped Manchester United secure new investment.
Ratcliffe, 73, has long been a public figure in both business and sports, but this controversy puts his role at the football club under the spotlight.
Many observers say the timing of the comments was sensitive, as the UK continues to grapple with debates over immigration policy, economic growth, and social cohesion.
Critics argue that public figures in leadership positions, including football owners, have a responsibility to speak carefully about national issues, especially those involving race, nationality, or immigration.
Ratcliffe, however, insists that discussing immigration in the context of economic growth is necessary. “My intention was to stress that governments must manage migration alongside investment in skills, industry, and jobs so that long-term prosperity is shared by everyone,” he said.
The FA has yet to announce whether it will formally launch an investigation, but insiders say the governing body takes any potential reputational damage to football seriously.
Social media reactions have been polarized, with some defending Ratcliffe’s right to raise the debate and others condemning his language as harmful and exclusionary.
Observers note that the controversy is likely to continue, as Manchester United’s fan base is global, diverse, and sensitive to issues of inclusion and representation.
The debate also highlights the fine line public figures must walk when commenting on sensitive national issues while holding influential positions in sports and business.
Ratcliffe’s apology and explanation may help ease tensions, but many say it is the response from the FA and Manchester United leadership that will ultimately determine whether trust in the club is affected.
As the story develops, both football fans and policymakers will be watching closely to see how the FA handles the investigation and whether Ratcliffe faces any formal consequences for his remarks.
