Ethan Nwaneri’s name is once again buzzing among Arsenal fans, and this time the noise is coming from France. Just days into his loan move to Marseille, the teenage star has already made headlines, raised questions about his future, and shown why many believe he could play a big role at Arsenal in the years ahead.
The England U21 international joined Marseille on loan last month, and his impact was instant. On his debut, Nwaneri scored just 13 minutes after coming on, helping his new side secure a 3-1 win against Lens. It was a dream start that quickly won over fans at the Stade Velodrome.
Only a short time into his spell in France, Nwaneri has now spoken publicly about what comes next. In his first press conference with Marseille, the young midfielder confirmed that he is expected to return to Arsenal when the loan ends, but he also made it clear that football is never that simple.
Facing questions ahead of Marseille’s French Cup Round of 16 match against Stade Rennes, Nwaneri was asked directly about his future and the fact that his loan deal does not include a buy option.
He replied honestly, saying: “Yes, that’s true, anything is possible in football. We’ll see what happens. We’ll see if there’s any contact. I can’t tell you what will happen. We’ll see when it happens.”
Those words alone were enough to spark debate. While Arsenal remain his parent club, Nwaneri did not shut the door on the idea of staying in France if circumstances change.
Before agreeing to the move, Nwaneri took advice from players who know both clubs well. He is believed to have held private talks with William Saliba, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at Marseille during the 2021-22 season, and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard.
Both players reportedly encouraged him to embrace the challenge, learn from the pressure, and use the experience to grow as a footballer.
Nwaneri himself explained that Marseille’s history and passion played a huge role in his decision. Speaking about why he chose the French club, he said: “First of all, I think Olympique de Marseille is a very big club. The coaches, the fans, the way they play, it’s extraordinary. The fans really give it their all.”
He went on to explain that the decision was an easy one once the opportunity arrived. “I think it’s a great opportunity for me. I didn’t hesitate. Honestly, my answer to all of that was yes. I think that’s why I came.”
For Nwaneri, this loan is not just about minutes on the pitch. It is about growth, experience, and learning in a demanding environment. He made that clear as he spoke about what he hopes to gain by the end of the season.
He added: “The experience, seeing a big club like this, learning as much as possible, and being able to really add that to my skill-set at the end of the season.”
The teenager also addressed his physical condition since arriving in France. He admitted he was not fully fit at first, but believes things are moving in the right direction.
Nwaneri explained: “When I came here, obviously I wasn’t yet 100 per cent fit, but I’m working on it. I’ve also spoken with the staff and I think I’ll be able to play more and more.”
His confidence grew after his latest appearance, and he feels his body is responding well. “I felt good during the last match. That’s normal, of course, it’s a process. There haven’t been any injuries, so I feel good, honestly.”
Despite his bright start, the opening days of his loan have not been perfect. Marseille suffered a major disappointment in Europe, crashing out of the Champions League after a heavy 3-0 defeat to Club Brugge.
Their exit was confirmed after Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin produced dramatic late saves against Real Madrid, sealing Marseille’s fate in the competition.
Nwaneri was forced to watch from the stands in Belgium and was not eligible to play, even though he could have been registered for the knockout rounds later on.
Reflecting on the painful exit, the young midfielder showed maturity beyond his years. He said: “Obviously, the whole team was very disappointed. We wanted to move forward, to progress in the Champions League. Obviously, the way we were eliminated is frustrating.”
He also stressed the need to move on quickly in a busy season. “It wasn’t a good feeling, but we have to react quickly. We don’t really have time to dwell on it. Two or three days later, we already had to play again. It’s disappointing, but we have to keep going.”
Back in North London, Arsenal are monitoring his progress closely. However, the club is not expected to bring him back early, even after Mikel Merino suffered a foot injury.
There is no recall option included in Nwaneri’s loan agreement, meaning Marseille will keep him until the deal ends.
