Arsenal’s title push suffered a painful blow on Sunday, and once again, Mikel Arteta finds himself under the spotlight. The Gunners were beaten at the Emirates by Manchester United, a result that cut their lead at the top of the table to just four points and raised serious questions about decision-making on the touchline.
Before kick-off, Arsenal were clear favourites. The atmosphere was confident, the crowd was loud, and belief was strong. But by full-time, frustration had replaced optimism, and one moment in particular became the centre of the debate.
That moment came just before the hour mark, when Arteta made a bold and surprising quadruple substitution. It was a move that stunned fans inside the stadium and shocked former players watching on.
Among those taken off was Martin Odegaard, Arsenal’s captain and main creative force. Also withdrawn were Martin Zubimendi and Gabriel Jesus, leaving many wondering why such a drastic change was needed while the game was still very much alive.
Arsenal had just gone 2-1 down after a stunning strike from Patrick Dorgu. The goal was a setback, but not a disaster. Yet Arteta reacted instantly, making four changes in one move, a decision that would later be described as a “knee-jerk reaction.”
Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman did not hide his surprise. Speaking on Premier League Productions, he admitted he was shocked by what he saw unfolding on the sidelines.
“I was shocked if I’m honest,” Seaman said. “It was 2-1 at the time, it was almost a knee-jerk reaction to the second United goal. I don’t know why but it brought a bit of tension into the crowd.”
The decision to remove Odegaard caused the most reaction. The Norwegian midfielder is not just the captain but also the team’s main playmaker, the player who controls the tempo and creates chances when Arsenal need them most.
Seaman noticed that Odegaard did not look pleased as he left the pitch. For the crowd, it was a moment that changed the mood inside the Emirates, replacing belief with confusion.
“You’re taking off your captain and he didn’t look very happy about it,” Seaman continued. “It was a real surprise for me because he’s our playmaker.”
With Odegaard off, Arsenal were forced to reshuffle. Declan Rice had to drop deeper, altering the balance of the team. At the same time, Eze was introduced, a player who, as Seaman pointed out, has not yet had a major impact for Arsenal.
“To bring him off then changed everything,” Seaman added. “Declan had to drop back and then Eze is coming on who hasn’t done a lot for Arsenal yet.”
The former goalkeeper also questioned the timing and scale of the changes. Making four substitutions at once disrupted the rhythm Arsenal had built, even if it had been shaky.
“It was a strange substitution and bringing four on as well really disrupts the moment of the team,” he said.
To Arteta’s credit, one of those substitutes did make an impact. Mikel Merino came on and scored the equaliser late in the game, poking the ball home from close range after a corner caused chaos in the Manchester United penalty area.
With five minutes remaining, the Emirates erupted. Momentum had finally swung back in Arsenal’s favour, and many believed a winner was coming.
But that belief lasted just two minutes.
Manchester United broke forward, and Matheus Cunha unleashed a powerful long-range strike that flew past the Arsenal goalkeeper and silenced the stadium once again.
Arteta could only watch as all the energy his team had built disappeared in an instant.
After the match, the Arsenal boss admitted his disappointment. “Cunha puts it in the perfect angle to lose all the momentum, all the good energy that we were building up and to go and win the game for them,” Arteta said. “So very, very disappointed obviously.”
The defeat means Arsenal have now taken only two points from a possible nine in their last three league games. For a team chasing the title, that is a worrying run of form.
Former Arsenal manager Patrick Vieira is among those who have begun to question the team’s mental strength, especially in high-pressure moments.
Arteta himself acknowledged that something was missing on the day. “At the end we have to show the mental strength that we have on the pitch when it comes to matchday,” he said. “We were absolutely brilliant in Milan and today we weren’t that good.”
For Arsenal fans, the concern is not just the result, but the feeling that control slipped away both on the pitch and on the bench. The decision to remove Odegaard early may haunt Arteta if the title race tightens further.
With pressure mounting and rivals closing in, every choice now matters more than ever. One bold call against Manchester United may have changed more than just one match. It may have shifted the mood of Arsenal’s entire season.
